Attic insulation in Detroit
If DTE is the main provider of your home's heat, DTE pays a flat $600 rebate for insulating at least 500 square feet of attic, and a $250 bonus is available this fall when you add one more weatherization measure.1
DTE attic rebate
$600 for at least 500 sq ft of roof and attic insulation.1
Fall bonus
$250 extra for attic insulation plus one more measure installed Sept. 15–Dec. 15, 2026.1
Deadline
Applications within 6 months of purchase and no later than Dec. 31, 2026.1
DTE's insulation rebate, step by step
- Who qualifies: homes where DTE is the primary provider of heat, which DTE says covers most of its natural gas and gas/electric combination customers.1
- What kind of home: single-family homes, defined as 2 or fewer connected units, each separately metered with its own heating, cooling and water heating, built more than 24 months before you buy the insulation.1
- Roof and attic: $600 standard rebate, with a 500 sq ft minimum.1
- Do More bonus: $250 on top when you install eligible attic insulation plus one more measure, such as wall, kneewall, band joist, basement wall, crawl space wall or floor insulation. Installs must be done Sept. 15 to Dec. 15, 2026, with applications by Dec. 18, 2026.1
- DIY counts: DTE accepts do-it-yourself installs with a receipt, or you can use a contractor from its directory.1
DTE says rebate funds are first-come, first-served and limited.1 See the Detroit cost guide for what that $600 does to a typical bill.

DTE calls R-38, about 10 to 14 inches, the minimum recommended level for most attics.1 ENERGY STAR goes further for Michigan's climate: R-60 for an uninsulated attic, or add R-49 over 3 to 4 inches already there, in zones 4A/4B through 8.23
Removal and replacement
Most attics just need more on top; new insulation doesn't have to match the old type.4 Removal makes sense when the old material is damaged by water, fire or pests, and HomeGuide puts it at $1 to $2 per square foot nationally.4
Choosing an insulation company in Detroit
- Ask whether they're in DTE's contractor directory and participating in the current promotion; DTE says to confirm that before you schedule.1
- Get the square footage, starting and ending R-value and depth in writing, since the rebate depends on the attic area.1
- If you're adding a second measure for the bonus, have both on the same invoice dates inside the Sept. 15–Dec. 15 window.1

ZIP codes are 2020 Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, which closely approximate USPS ZIP codes. We list ZIPs that make up a substantial share of each community, so edge ZIPs that barely touch a town are left out, and some ZIPs span two towns.6 Not on the list?
